Understanding thyroid nodules
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck that plays a vital role in regulating hormones, metabolism, and energy levels. A thyroid nodule is a growth or lump that forms within this gland. While most nodules are noncancerous, some can cause symptoms or require further evaluation.
Common symptoms of thyroid nodules:
- A visible lump in the neck
- Hoarseness or changes in your voice
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Persistent cough not related to illness
- Fatigue or weight changes (if the nodule affects hormone levels)
Most nodules are found during a physical exam or imaging scan for another issue, and many don’t cause any noticeable symptoms.
Diagnosing thyroid conditions
At Peak ENT, we use state-of-the-art tools and techniques to evaluate thyroid nodules and determine whether they are benign or potentially cancerous.
Your diagnostic process may include:
- Neck ultrasound to assess the size, location, and features of the nodule
- Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy to test cells for signs of cancer
- Thyroid function blood tests to check hormone levels
- CT or MRI scans for more detailed imaging, if needed
We combine clinical experience with advanced technology to deliver accurate, timely results and minimize uncertainty.
Treatment options
Your treatment plan will depend on the size, location, type, and activity of your thyroid nodule or cancer. At Peak ENT, we offer both non-surgical and surgical options and work closely with endocrinologists, oncologists, and radiologists as needed for comprehensive care.
For benign thyroid nodules:
- Observation and monitoring
- Thyroid hormone therapy (in select cases)
- Minimally invasive procedures (for cystic or large nodules causing symptoms)
For thyroid cancer:
- Thyroidectomy (partial or total) – Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland
- Lymph node removal, if cancer has spread
- Radioactive iodine therapy (in collaboration with your care team)
- Ongoing monitoring and imaging post-surgery
Our ENT surgeons perform thyroid surgeries with precision and a focus on minimizing scarring, preserving voice function, and ensuring a smooth recovery.
Thyroid cancer: What you need to know
Thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when caught early. It’s often discovered through nodule evaluation and confirmed through biopsy. There are several types of thyroid cancer, with papillary thyroid cancer being the most common and generally slow-growing.
Signs that may indicate thyroid cancer:
- A hard or rapidly growing lump in the neck
- Swelling or pain in the front of the neck
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Hoarseness that doesn’t go away
Early detection and a clear treatment plan are essential to successful outcomes—and that’s what we provide.
