What is a nasal fracture?

A nasal fracture is a break or crack in the bone or cartilage of the nose, most often the bridge. Because the nose is the most prominent part of the face, it’s highly vulnerable to injury.

Nasal fractures are typically caused by:

  • Sports-related injuries
  • Falls or accidents
  • Physical altercations or impact trauma
  • Motor vehicle collisions

Sometimes, the break is obvious. Other times, it’s hidden beneath swelling or mistaken for a bad bruise. That’s why early evaluation helps avoid complications.

Symptoms of a broken nose

You may have a nasal fracture if you experience:

  • Nose pain and tenderness
  • Swelling or bruising around the nose and eyes
  • Bleeding from the nose
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • A visible crooked or flattened appearance
  • A popping or cracking sound at the time of injury
  • A shifting sensation when touching the nose

If you suspect a nasal fracture, it’s best to get evaluated within the first seven to 10 days after injury — before the bones begin to heal improperly.

What to expect during your evaluation

At Peak ENT, we’ll perform a thorough physical exam and may use imaging such as X-rays or CT scans to assess the severity of the break and check for other facial injuries or internal damage.

We’ll also evaluate:

Nasal airflow to determine if breathing is compromised
Deviated septum or other structural changes
Cosmetic changes you’d like to address, now or in the future

Treatment options for nasal fractures

Not all nose fractures require surgery. At Peak ENT, we match treatment to the nature of the break and your individual needs.

Nonsurgical treatment

  • Pain management and anti-inflammatory medication
  • Cold compresses and head elevation to reduce swelling
  • Manual realignment (closed reduction) within 7–10 days of injury

Surgical treatment

Surgical intervention may be recommended if the fracture is complex, healing improperly, or significantly affecting appearance or breathing.

  • Septoplasty to correct a deviated septum
  • Rhinoplasty or nasal reconstruction to restore shape and function
  • Open reduction surgery for severe or multiple fractures

Why choose Peak ENT?

  • Board-certified ENT and facial trauma specialists
  • Expertise in both functional and cosmetic nasal repair
  • Advanced diagnostics and imaging
  • In-office procedures when appropriate
  • Compassionate care and comprehensive follow-up

Don’t wait! Early treatment matters

A broken nose isn’t simply about appearance. Left untreated, it can cause long-term breathing problems, chronic sinus issues, or permanent facial asymmetry. The sooner you’re evaluated, the better your chances for full recovery.

At Peak ENT, we’ll make sure you’re seen quickly, treated thoroughly, and cared for every step of the way.
