What is an ear infection?

An ear infection (otitis media) is an inflammation of the middle ear, often caused by bacteria or viruses. It typically results from fluid buildup behind the eardrum, which can become infected when the Eustachian tube (which drains fluid from the ear) becomes swollen or blocked.

Ear infections can affect one or both ears and range from mild to severe.

Symptoms of ear infections

In children:

  • Tugging or pulling at the ears
  • Crying more than usual
  • Trouble sleeping or eating
  • Fever
  • Fluid drainage from the ear
  • Difficulty hearing or responding to sounds
  • Balance issues or clumsiness

In adults:

  • Ear pain or pressure
  • Fluid drainage
  • Hearing loss or muffled sounds
  • Feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Dizziness or balance problems

If symptoms persist, occur frequently, or don’t respond to medication, it’s time to see an ENT specialist.

Causes and risk factors

Ear infections can be triggered by:

  • Colds and upper respiratory infections
  • Allergies
  • Enlarged adenoids or sinus problems
  • Smoking or secondhand smoke exposure
  • Bottle feeding (in infants)
  • Structural or anatomical differences in the ears or Eustachian tubes

Chronic ear infections can lead to complications such as hearing loss, speech delays, and damage to the eardrum or surrounding structures.

What is an ear infection?

At Peak ENT, we treat both acute and chronic ear infections with an approach that prioritizes comfort, prevention, and long-term ear health.

Non-surgical treatments:

  • Antibiotics or antiviral medications
  • Pain relief and anti-inflammatory support
  • Nasal sprays or allergy treatments to reduce Eustachian tube inflammation
  • Hearing monitoring and speech/language assessments for children, if needed

In-office and surgical solutions:

  • Myringotomy – A small incision in the eardrum to drain fluid and relieve pressure
  • Ear tube placement (tympanostomy tubes) – Small tubes inserted into the eardrum to allow fluid to drain and prevent future infections
  • Adenoidectomy – Removal of enlarged adenoids if they’re contributing to chronic infections
  • Ongoing hearing evaluations to monitor for complications
