What is a cleft lip?
A cleft lip is a congenital condition where the tissue that forms the upper lip doesn’t fully join before birth. It can appear as a small notch or a large gap that extends up toward the nose. A cleft lip can occur on one side (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral) of the mouth and may also be accompanied by a cleft palate, which affects the roof of the mouth.
A cleft lip is one of the most common facial birth differences, typically diagnosed at birth or even before birth through prenatal imaging.

- Long-term support for families through every milestone
Cleft lip repair surgery: What to expect
Cleft lip surgery is typically done when the baby is between three and six months old, depending on their health and development. The procedure:
- Closes the gap in the lip and creates a more natural appearance
- Improves lip and nasal function
- Is performed under general anesthesia
- Usually only requires a short hospital stay
- Leaves a small, well-placed scar that fades significantly over time
